New England Fast Ferry, Massachusetts, United States

4.5 (19 reviews) Spent Ranking #14 in New Bedford Ferries

Quick, Convenient and comfortable

We used the Martha’s Vineyard FAST FERRY from New Bedford the other day for a day trip to the Vineyard it was a very pleasant ride: smooth, comfortable and Scenic as it went along the coast of Hyannis, Cape Cod. We made reservations ahead of time so there was no waiting and we were at the Vineyard before we knew it. Parking is very reasonable only $10 for 24 hours. You don’t need a car on the Vineyard public transportation is available for $1 you can go to a gorgeous beach or Edgertown. The ferry ports in the Victorian Village of Oak Bluffs with lots to do wonderful restaurants, shops and a beach. The best thing about leaving from New Bedford is it was only 40 minutes from Providence to the Ferry terminal as apposed to 90 to Woods Hole. The FAST FERRY ride is less than one hour the same company has a traditional ferry which is a longer ride which cost less and you still save on the drive but who wouldn’t rather be on a nice boat ride rather than fighting traffic.

Great alternative to battling Cape traffic.
We took a day trip to Martha's Vineyard and debated which of the ferry options to take. We live in RI and decided to take the fast ferry from New Bedford to Oak Bluffs even though the price was a little steep. (70 dollars round trip)..Would definitely do it again. It was easy in and out for parking and no traffic issues at all. There are 2 options for parking. One is parking right on sight for 20 dollars. If it is full or you want to save some money there is a lot just down the road for 12 dollars. They run a shuttle that picks you up right at your car and brings you right to the ferry! Very convenient. The ferry ride itself takes about 1 hour and there is air conditioned seating downstairs and there is limited outside seating upstairs and also some indoor seats upstairs. Food and drinks are served on board For the return trip you have to read the schedule and do a little planning because depending on the departure time it may leave from Vineyard Haven or from Oak Bluffs. It is not a big deal as there is a city bus for 2 dollars that goes between the 2 cities every 15 minutes. Perfect
For weeks we sweated the details of how to get to Marthas Vineyard from Providence (after flying in from Chicago). With a couple of seasickness-prone family members, and no desire to battle traffic going to Woods Hole, we ultimately chose the New England Fast Ferry out of New Bedford. We had read that the ferry out of Providence has a reputation for rough-going because it crosses open ocean, and we also knew that driving to Woods Hole on a Sunday could mean terrible back-ups and delays. New Bedford offers an hour ferry service to the island, and because it stays closer to land the ride is easier and more stable. Our family members did just fine on both trips, and we were treated to a lovely, scenic ride for as a bonus (and yes, there is an outdoor seating area up top!) I made all our reservations seemlessly online, and we were even able to store our luggage behind the counter while we were waiting for our shuttle connection to the airport. And speaking of shuttles - Yes We Van is the one to call. Noel set us up perfectly - arranged pick up in Providence, took us to the harbor in NB, gave us some local tourist tips, picked up our luggage at the NB ferry terminal when we returned, held it for us, and then came to the Whaling Museum to pick us up after a few hours before transporting us back to the airport. It was wonderful not to have to worry about logistics on this trip. It pays to plan ahead, then enjoy the ride!
