A wonderful religious visit to a special place

While visiting the area on a Fall foliage New England trip we stopped by the National Shrine and spent time visiting the chapels, candle offertory and gift shop. The chapels and grounds are both beautiful and tranquil. We enjoyed our visit and worshippedl n the two beutiful chapels and bought several religious gifts for friends in the wonderful and very large giftshop. All staff were helpful and courteous during our visit. The grounds feature multiple statues depicting the crucifixion and full size stations of the cross personified in sculpture.

Beautiful, life size Stations of the Cross
The area was much larger than I had anticipated. The paintings, stained glass and woodwork on the ceiling in the church was impressive. The alter was particularly beautiful. The Stations of the Cross wound through the lawn area and up a hill. The walk is perhaps a fourth a mile, and is beautiful. The Stations are life size, and the carvings are very impressive and detailed. If you pass the church (on your left) and the stations (on your right) and then walk down the path, turn left on the first path and then right on the first path, down an incline, you’ll see a sign that the incline is steep and to be careful. Walk down that path to get to the beautiful Grotto and Candle Shrine with beautiful mosaic pictures. (It would have been good if signage had been on the road indicating that’s where the Grotto was. I walked around a bit and finally had to ask for directions.) The Grotto is beautiful, but unfortunately there is a tent blocking part of the view, but I believe the tent is there for Mass. The Candle Shrine is also remarkable with beautiful mosaic pictures. Walking further, past the Grotto, you’ll also see the Shrine of the Holy Innocents which is sad and beautiful at the same time. There are other buildings and statues to see as well as a very large gift shop.

    well worth a visit
This was a lovely thing to do on a beautiful day. There are a number of different shrines on the large property to visit. The main chapel is beautiful and peaceful. You can wander the grounds to see other statues, and please do see the life sized stations of the cross.
