Nice getaway

Good parking, pleasant scenery, eats in the towns it runs though: Ayer, Groton, Pepperell. Good pavement all the way with just a few divots.

What an awesome trail to walk along!
We camped in nearby Littleton and hopped on the trailhead at Groton and it was a beautiful walkway for us to take the dogs on a nice walk on a gorgeous fall day. There were lots of people out that day but there was plenty of room on the trail for bikers, walkers and joggers - we didn't have enough time to really explore the length of the trail but will definitely return. The paved trail is very easy for for both humans and pups to traverse, highly recommend!

    Easy rider
I just found this trail a short time ago and love it. I am not an avid cyclist, but I have found this trail comfortable-hardly any incline, just a very short stretch in Nashua. From Nashua to Ayer is about 12.5 miles. A few frost heaves but most are marked. There are several parking lots along the trail if you want to start at different spots. There are a lot of places with water alongside, so I would expect to see wildlife once in a while. I actually spotted a porcupine on my first visit. There are several street crossings, but the one in Pepperell is the only difficult one. With kids I would walk across. The Nashua lot is on Gilson St-once in the lot there are two trails-take the paved one, the other is more of a short mountain bike trail that doesnt connect to the main trail at all. Made that mistake my first time there. The Rail Trail is so nice you may overextend yourself by going further than you planned-remember you have to go back! I plan how long I want to ride, and turn back halfway. It is also accessible by commuter rail at the stop in Ayer.
