Narrow Gauge Rail Trail, Massachusetts, United States

4.0 (2 reviews) Spent Ranking #4 in Bedford Biking Trails

Nice ride

This is a rail trail that runs 3 miles from Bedford depot to Billerica. It is primarily a pack dirt surface that is best for mountain bikes. The trail runs through the York Conservation Area and also past Fawn Lake. There are a few short hiking trails along the way if you want to get off the bike and stretch your legs. Along with the Reformatory Branch and the Minuteman trail this area offers a day full of riding.

Good Bike/Hike Exercise Trail Following Old Rail Line
I was visiting the area for a family get together so I awoke early one morning and found this trail near the Bedford commercial center. There are other entry points but this one is near the historic depot and would be a particularly good starting point for visitors to the area. You can walk, skate, bike - whatever. The trail follows the old roadbed of the country's first two-foot-gauge common-carrier railway, the Billerica & Bedford Railroad. It goes north from the Loomis Street depot site three miles to the Bedford-Billerica town line. Beyond this point is private property. So if you do the whole stretch back and forth, it'll be about 6 miles. The trail reaches Fawn Lake ( Hayden Pond) about midway, just after crossing Pine Hill Rd and the VA complex. A much visited spa resort once stood here. This area offers additional recreational options. A marked walking path circles the pond. And there's a wooded area just a bit south. If you decide to take all this in, give yourself some more time.
