Mount Greylock, Massachusetts, United States

4.5 (305 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Berkshires Mountains

Great view even without tower access

The views were great. Bring a sweatshirt delta temp 15-20F from bottom. The dedication to our men & women who sacrificed so much is moving. It’s worth the drive. (Or the hike) $20 to park without access to the tower was pricey

MT. GREYLOCK - one of my favorite places !!
The Visitors Center on Rockwell Rd on the Lanesboro side of the mountain is chock full of information about the area. Stop there first. I usually visit Greylock each year in October. There are Nice and Easy hikes led by rangers and special activities scheduled even in wintery weather (road to the top closes in Nov or when the snow makes it impassable but the Visitor Center is always open). There is plenty of hiking and a variety of trails which the rangers at the visitors center can help scope out for you. Ask about the Greylock Ramble which summits Mt. Greylock the second week of Oct. At the summit is a wonderful stone building that offers some nice food and reservation only dinners. This place is called Bascom Lodge and many hikers from the Appalachian Trail rent a room there (part of the Appalachian Trail runs through Greylock). At the summit is newly renovated memorial tower that you can ascend to the top for a 360 deg view. There is a ski shelter at the far end of the parking lot that was used for the Thunderbolt Ski Trail. This was a famous and challenging ski trail popular in the 30's and 40's. Hitler sent a team to race the famous trail and Adams WWII hero, Rudy Konieczny used to ski that trail. Trains used to run to Adams from Grand Central in NYC for this race. Lots of history here - enjoy !!

Great views easy access from Williamstown
If it’s a clear day you have to go up the mountain. Parking at top has about 30 spaces, fills up in early afternoon and you may have to wait to get in. Most people don’t stay that long so rherdd Ed is constant turnover but when we left around 1:30 on Sunday line of cars was 30 and there’s no way to turn around once your in the line. Views are great, Appalachian trail runs across it so you could hike for a long time if you want. $20 if you have out of state plates
