Nice Winery Tasting Room and Staff!
Constant Companion and I have driven by Mill River Winery many times. Today we decided to stop and take the wine tour offered in conjunction with Essex County's Trails and Sails program. The owner, Donna, showed us around the facility and explained in great detail the process of making wine(Donna is a former researcher with a PhD in Chemistry). We thoroughly enjoyed our time with her and when we finished she offered us each a glass of their new chardonnay. We also did the wine tasting and ended up purchasing the Barrel Fermented Chardonnay($32.95), a Plantation Dry Red($18.95), and a refillable container of some very nice Greek EVO. If you are driving by, STOP, this is a fun local place!

REVISIT ~ 6 YEARS AFTER ITS OPENING
When Mill River Winery opened in July 2011, I happened by while en route to Ipswich and Essex. I was one of the first visitors. When I arrived this time about 4:00 PM, people were the bar doing flight tastings. I browsed the refrigerated case for cheese. I got a wedge of Piave. It was a new cheese to me. Inquiring about it, I learned that it was an Italian cow's milk cheese named after the Piave River. It had a protected designation. Only cheese produced in the Dolomites in the Province of Belluno in the Veneto Region can use that name. I was told that It had won several gold and silver medals at world and European cheese expositions. Later, at home, I checked it online. It was true. It was a hard cheese with a mild, sweet, delicate taste. The staffer recommended pairing it with Zinfandel or other fruity wine. It also went well with full-bodied red wines such as Barolo, Cabernet, Merlot and Malbec, Burgundy, Pinot Grigio, and their own Mill River Winery Breaking Point. I sampled the Mill River Winery Nancy’s Cannon and the Mill River Winery Breaking Point. I favored the latter. It was a Pinot Noir-style dry, medium-body red wine with fruity berry notes and accents of vanilla from French Oak barrel aging. The finish was dry. I got a bottle at $16.95. It was good to see how this small winery had grown in 6 years. I rate Mill River Winery at 4.50. I will visit again. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below.
