Peaceful day at Memorial Beach, Webster, MA

We visited Memorial Beach on Sat., 7/6, around 10:30 a.m.; life guards are on duty. Non-residents pay th$30.00 per car; gates open 7 a.m. & close at dusk-they have a boat ramp but fees are higher for that use. There is nothing like a gentle breeze on a hot, humid day to rid you of your crankiness! I have been going to this beach since I was a little child, and have many fond memories of this place! My husband & I enjoyed the day under the shade of the trees with a picnic lunch, and splashing around in the refreshingly cool and clean waters of Webster Lake-this is a scenic lake & you will spend your day admiring all of the different types of boats using the Lake! I especially enjoyed using our floats in the water. This park has a wonderful playground area for young children. Guests at the park were quiet and respectful of each other, & there was no loud music playing to distract or annoy you. We enjoyed our day so much, that we stayed until 4, went home, had supper and returned for an evening swim! I was disappointed by some of the newer rules being enforced: NO GRILLS of any type; you can't walk beyond the 'fenced' areas any longer, which means you can't walk to the tip of the small peninsula, and enjoy the beautiful, natural sandbar area or the wooded area on the other end of this small beach. Sand in the swimming areas is soft and easy on the feet once you wade past the first couple feet of shoreline. Rest rooms need to be updated & cleaned better (not a reflection of the toilets-they were kept clean) & picnic tables are a mess. Suggestions: make sure you have sandals; beach sand is gritty and tough on the feet; bring a tablecloth (dollar store plastic ones are perfect for this) & something to cover the benches, because you can get slivers. Concession stand is OK, but you pay for the convenience.

    Wonderful Summer Destination
Webster Lake is made up of 3 ponds that are North Pond, Middle Pond, and South Pond, all of them are connected by "Narrows", which are tight shallow areas. The town of Webster (Board of Selectmen) has implemented fees for residents and non-residents to launch boats and enter Memorial beach during the peak season, Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend. The fees vary depending if you are launching a boat, and resident status. Off season anybody can come in during the operating hours sunrise to sunset. The water is clean and clear. Most of the shoreline has been developed to the extreme now that there is a water and sewer system in place. Memorial Beach itself, it is a great place to spend a day if you are a Webster Resident. There are Permanent concrete Corn Hole Boards, Ping Pong tables, basketball courts, playground, and picnic tables. There is a list of rules and regulations for use of the lake. The lake is patrolled by the Webster PD on weekends during peak season, on duty Life Guards from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend. There is also a concession stand that is open during the season located right on Memorial Beach that has food and changing rooms. The State Boat launch on South Pond (Lakeside Ave) is free to anybody that can deal with a difficult launch ramp it doesn't go very far into the water so pulling can be challenging. If you like to Sail, Webster Sailing Association located on Middle Pond on Bates Point Road is always looking for new members. They have a private club house, boat ramp, and a large lot to store your sailboat for the season. You must become a member of the WSA first. Go to their web site wsasail.org for more information. I personally spend most of the Summer on the lake in my Sailboat. All in all Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg is a very nice lake to visit. Bring your family and have some fun in the Sun!
