Keystone Arch Bridges Trail, Massachusetts, United States

4.5 (24 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Chester Hiking Trails

Pleasant walk, impressive structures.

A fairly easy 5-mile round-trip walk with several beautiful and historic structures to wonder over. You can feel the past and appreciate what engineering feats these must have been in their day. Well worth a trip to Chester. Dinner at the great Chester Common Table completed a memorable day!

A nice walk in the woods
This was a lovely walk. The waterfalls were beautiful. There are some gradual inclines and declines along the trail. We saw some warblers and other birds. We spent about 3 hours strolling along enjoying the spring sunshine. No bathroom facilities are available. If you're using Google Maps, there is a chance it will take you to some private property. The real parking lot is about a half mile up the road.

A lovely and surprising historic site
Although I had been visiting this area for many years, I only learned about the Keystone Arch Bridges quite recently. Located been Chester MA and Middlefield MA, the trail (not far from Route 20) is off the Middlefield Road. There is a large sign with a trail map and information about the historic railroad bridges, most of which are still in use, along the west branch of the Westfield River. Even if you only walk part of the way, you'll enjoy some beautiful scenery, including a waterfall. The nearby town of Chester boasts a railroad museum, a very good summer theater and a few restaurants, and the area has several farms where you can pick your own blueberries.
