Hurricane Barrier Harbor Walk, Massachusetts, United States

4.5 (25 reviews) Spent < 1 hour Ranking #11 in New Bedford Piers & Boardwalks

Great Views & Easy Walk

Great Walk atop the Hurricane Barrier with sweeping ocean views. Not crowded. Easy parking on Gifford Street. We were rewarded when we found that the walkway ended at Cisco Brewery where we could have beer and snacks before walking back.

Go at low tide to investigate Palmer Island
Lovely walk along the hurricane barrier, but wish I had allowed more time to investigate Palmer Island, which is accessible ONLY at low tide (+/- 2 hours). We walked out on top of the barrier, which is a hop from stone to stone and not suitable for strollers or small kids. After viewing the gate of the barrier itself (image in the Gates of Mordor under water!), we walked down to the paved section. Then we walked back, stopping to investigate Palmer Island briefly before sunset. There is free parking at a small lot near the boatyard.

Nice scenic walk or bycicle ride
You can enter along East Rodney French Blvd or at a parking area right as the barrier as it crosses the Acushnet River. It is a nice walk or bicycle ride along the river or a short walk out to the hurricane gate that is the gateway to the New Bedford Harbor. A sort wade off the walk is Palmer's Island and lighthouse. You will have nice view of both the New Bedford and Fairhaven harbors. The dike itself is a very interesting thing to see. On the other side of the point at the point where it crosses West Rodney French Blvd there is the Cove Walk. There is an extension of the barrier and the other walk There is also a very large antique shop, New Bedford Antiques.
