It'll bowl you over, New England style!
Candlepin bowling is unique to New England and the Maritime Provinces of Canada. Unfortunately, many bowling centers featuring this indigenous sport--it was invented in nearby Worcester, MA--have closed over the years. So, if in Massachusetts, it's imperative to try something that is quintessentially New England. French King Bowling Center is a gem of a place. The owners are friendly, and welcome everyone from the individual bowler to a group of Chinese middle school kids, as was the case last summer, when I supervised a visit. The lanes are in great condition. And sure, the reset button might be slow, or might malfunction from time to time, but that's all part of the charm. Located near the iconic French King Bridge in Erving, MA, this place is well worth a visit. And should you ever be in New England on a rainy day, it's an even better excuse to go and bowl a few strings. Just remember that each frame includes THREE shots, and not two. This means that it's possible to get a TEN in a frame, if knocking down all the pins within three shots!

I've been going here since I was a toddler, always clean, friendly people! Make sure you try the fries I cant stress this enough they cut the potato right there as you order!
