Very nice and crowded as usual

Located in the heart of downtown Boston, this bustling complex of novelty carts, distinctive shops, national chain stores, performers, food stands and restaurants brought new life to a historic meeting place.

    Historic attraction with some shopping
We spent more time here than expected. A must for history buffs, especially if you know about some of the famous speakers who have spoken here. Read all the plaques, soak it in, and make a donation (it's free, otherwise). We even ended up walking up all the way to the top where there is a large area dedicated to the history of a local national guard unit. The bottom has shops, etc., but we didn't spent as much time there since it seemed like pretty much the same Boston memorabilia you see at shops all around town. There were some performer and dancers outside as well, and we watched them for a little while.

    Crowded
We went through the very crowded food hall at lunchtime. It was totally mobbed with people. They only have orders to go and then you have to get lucky to find a place to sit... or stand and eat your food at a long double sided counter with all of the other miserable visitors. They do have a huge selection of pretty good food options. However, the crowd, high price and noise level was a bit much. To add a little more aggravation, they had a street performer with electric instruments playing music in the rotunda which reverberated everywhere. This place is a sensory overload. I ate a $20 piece of fish which in a normal restaurant would be $8.00 Its probably worth going just to walk through even if you don't want to eat because it unique. They broke the mold after making this place for a reason!
