East Longmeadow Public Library, Massachusetts, United States

3.5 (2 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #7 in East Longmeadow Libraries

My Favorite Place in Town

The East Longmeadow Public Library is a beautiful and welcoming facility. As a two resident since 1989, I was pleased with the "old" library and even more pleased with the new. The staff is always courteous and helpful. I'm particularly happy with the way staff help folks with tech questions. It makes it much easier for us to use the library online system. The programs are high quality, always well described. Some are geared to certain ages and interests and others are suitable for a wide audience. When I attended a program on butterflies this summer, there were children and a whole range of ages including elders. All seemed equally fascinated. My favorite place in town, even counting marvelous The Apple Place.

    Downstairs front desk GREAT...upstairs Reference/Computer check-in Terrible!
1st time here last week & I got them listed on Trip Advisor. As a previous resident & current "traveler" in the region, I came in to use a computer & found 2 smartly dressed young women at the front desk who were friendly & nice. I was directed upstairs to the Reference Counter desk area to check-in for "Guest" computer usage. I already went through the fact that my previous Library Card is no longer in the system to the age. Upstairs I found the opposite of what I had encountered downstairs. The young woman (No name tag) at the desk appeared not well-groomed & rather "frumpy" in dress & attitude. She lectured me that I could use a separate section computer for 15 minutes Only OR pay $30+ for a Library Card. I educated her on the fact that ALL pubic libraries Must offer FREE computer usage to any member of the public as they all accept Federal Funds, "our" tax money. She just repeated like a little parrot that I could use the 15 minute time limit computers or pay for a library card. I replied the 15 minute computers are apparently how "they" get around the mandate from "our" Federal Government. Finally she gave me a pass to use a computer, as she lectured "for this ONE time only then you'll HAVE to buy a Library Card"!. I since called the Town Manager's office to report my facts & concerns & I trust that this new facility will revisit their policies & make appropriate, positive changes. Other nearby libraries like the AIC (American International College), Springfield, Massachusetts library & the Somers, Connecticut Public do not have any such "Restrictions". In fact the AIC library doesn't even require any type of Sign-In - any person just comes in & sits down to a computer! Please adopt more user-friendly policies East Longmeadow because the image presented that I have outlined is NOT the image you all want to extend to any visitor or public-at-large! This review would have been only One oval, except the young women employees downstairs were SO professional.
