Crystal Caves Family Entertainment Center, Massachusetts, United States

3.5 (28 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Auburn Game & Entertainment Centers • Miniature Golf

Fun place for mini golf

Clearly this place is very popular, as shown by some worn spots on the course, and it is very fun. Not too challenging for the little ones, but enough of a challenge for the adults, We will make this a part of every summer from now on.

    OK, but not spectacular
Stopped in on our way to visit family in Connecticut. After we checked in, we realized the wait would be too long, so we played the first two holes (after waiting more than 30 minutes), then jumped around the next few groups so we could play some of the 18. We managed to do this several times, because our time was limited. So paying for 18 holes for two people, we just managed 6 holes total. Miniature golf does have some basic rules, and Crystal Caves was oblivious to them, or didn't care to enforce them. Lots of groups greater than 4 in a group; children of all ages hitting their ball over 20 times each; parents who would not control children; and on and on. Not real family entertainment, but that seems to be par for the course in the 21st Century. Maybe if you went when the weather was lousy, you could play 18 holes.

mini golf is fine, skip the ice cream
We took the kids for mini golf, which was fine, but I had to constantly worry about them losing their ball in the many hazards, only because if you lose one, they charge you a $2 fee to give you another. Mini golf was fine, the holes are getting a little outdated and could use some updating, but the gardens were beautiful. It's a little pricey for the area. With nothing else in Auburn, you'd expect to pay a bit less. These were Cape Cod prices. After golf, we had ice cream. What a mistake. We waited 40 minutes- YES 40 MINUTES after we paid, for them to scoop our ice cream- 3 of which were soft serve and should have just come out of a machine. There were only 2 other people in the ice cream shop at the time, so it wasn't like they were backed up. The soft serve was basically liquid and after the 40 minute wait, the employee said, "sorry, it's a bit soft" and handed it to us a melted mess in a cup, which should have been a cone if it wasn't already liquid. We would have asked for our money back and just left, but the employee seemed to disappear. We went outside to enjoy the ice cream and sat at a picnic table, when another employee decided that would be a good time to begin landscaping with a weed whacker 3 feet from us. So we couldn't even talk with one another at the table because of the noise and had the gasoline fumes from the equipment in our faces as we tried to eat. The table next to us had 4 elderly people also trying to enjoy some ice cream and pleasant conversation, and were visibly annoyed by the disturbance. Seriously if you don't open until 9, do your landscaping before your guests arrive.
