Very nice hiking experience with historical twist
We hiked the trails in Assabet River Refuge during Covid-19 pandemic which made this trip challenging (lots of foot traffic during weekend and not everyone was following the distancing guidelines, unfortunately). The area itself was beautiful! Trails were passing through mixed forest, along some wetlands and swampy areas with lots of birds. We saw a garter snake and some traces of beaver activity. Along the trail we discovered many bunkers which we later learned were used as ammunition storage during WWII, so very interesting! There is a Visitors Center and restrooms (both currently closed) and at least 4 areas for free parking. There is a chance to come with a stroller or wheelchair but only along the paved road is the surface smooth enough; the paved path leads directly to the edge of the water and there are several decks overlooking the river to enjoy. Highly recommend.

lovely walk in the woods
We took a lovely walk in the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge and found wheelchair friendly trails. We parked at the lot on the corner of Hudson Road and Winterberry Way (put the address of the refuge, 680 Hudson Road Sudbury, MA into your GPS). We then followed the sidewalk along Winterberry Way, past the visitor center, and the beautiful view of Puffer Pond that you can see right from the sidewalk. We went we then got onto Puffer Pond Trail which is a lovely flat, wide trail with beautiful views of the pond. Only a few tree roots were annoying with my wheelchair, and I wasn't even using my Freewheel. We came across a small dock that you can go out on and sit and look out of the water. Puffer Pond Trail loops back to the Winterberry Way. We then walked back to our parked car along Winterberry Way. We look forward to going back and exploring other trails.
