Renovated building, great exhibits

The Martha's Vineyard Museum (MVM) is a historical and cultural institution collecting art, artifacts, oral histories, documents, and photographs that help tell the stories of Martha's Vineyard from its formation as an island to the present. Founded as the Dukes County Historical Society in 1922, it was officially renamed the Martha's Vineyard Museum in 2006 to better reflect its focus on both collecting the history of the island and presenting, educating, and sharing it with the public. In 2011, MVM purchased the 1895 Marine Hospital site in Vineyard Haven and set out to transform it into a new museum. MVM made the decision to maintain ownership of part of its original Edgartown campus in order to continue to steward the historic Cooke House and create a public garden for the community. In March 2019, the Vineyard Haven site opened to the public with great fanfare and a blockbuster exhibit celebrating the island's profound influence on the work of Thomas Hart Benton.

If you love the Vineyard, this Museum is a must
We do love the Vineyard and have been visiting frequently for 15 years. Oddly, we never visited the Museum when it was in Edgartown, just around the corner from where we stay. But the new Museum is in a large building (historic in itself!) with impressive views of Lagoon Pond, Beach Road, Oak Bluffs, and the harbor. The exhibits are almost universally outstanding, covering many diverse things, including the geographic and human history of the island, notable people and events, and shipwrecks. There was art and fascinating artifacts. I'm not sure I would bring young kids here, at least not for the exhibits, but the Museum appears to have many activities and events for them. Teens and perhaps pre-teens who are curious will likely find things that grab their attention. Go!

    Well Worth a Visit
Leaving the museum, I recall thinking how surprising it was I was the only visitor there! I really enjoyed my visit. Thought it was great that they had a short video that gave a timeline of the history of Martha's Vineyard - a perfect foundation on which to start your visit. Loved the special exhibit on the Wampanoag Tribe and its missing shell belt from the 1600s. Such an interesting story and presented in such a captivating way with videos. Also learned a lot from the shipwreck and whaling exhibits, but also really enjoyed some of the other more "off-beat" displays. And it wasn't overwhelming - I think I was able to see just about everything in about an hour. Really nice building too!
