Marowijne River, Marowijne District, Suriname

3.5 (6 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Albina Bodies of Water

Very scenic river sights ... expect some spray!

The mighty Marowijne river separates Suriname from French Guyana. At the quite colorful Albina river boat landing you can take a ferry boat to cross the river and visit the somewhat more orderly city of Saint Laurent. Or you can leave here in Northward direction to the turtle beaches of Galibi (a few hours), or in southward direction to destinations like Drietabbetje and even Apetina in multi-day journeys. The river can get a little choppy especially near the ocean, expect a little spray, recommended to bring a poncho! Also there can be an occasional rainshower.

Boat trip over the Marowijne River
We did fly from Paramaribo to Stoelmanseiland (great views of the rainforest and the rivers), did stay 3 nights on Tabiki Island, did a trip over the Lawa River (not that great) and a trip over the Tapanahoni River to Dritabiki (great again). Then we did take a boat from Tabiki Island to Albina. This trip over 166km did take all day (9:00 AM to 4:45 PM), sitting in a small boat in the sun with 33 degrees and later on in the rain with a life jacket on (mandatory on the Marowijne River and Lawa River). Just terrible for the last 5 hours. We had only one short lunch break. Only the south section of the Marowijne River with some rapids were great but on the rest of the trip was not much to see; several villages and many trees. I will not recommend to take a long boat trip over this river.

    Dangerous Boat Trip
We took a korjaal boat down the river and visited some spots in French Guiana. We were not told how to prepare for such a trip and it was very uncomfortable. On the way back, the river was very rough and our small boat nearly capsized. We had to quickly get to shore before our final destination in order to survive@! Not a good trip nor are safety precautions in place.
