Musee International du Golfe de Guinee, Maritime Region, Togo

3.5 (30 reviews) Sunday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent Ranking #6 in Lome Speciality Museums

Best thing to see in Lome

The Musee International du Golfe de Guinee is definitely the most interesting "sight" in Lome. (Far superior to the dusty old National Museum!) It is an excelent private collection of African sculpture from the last 200 years or so, with West Africa dominating. (Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Cote D'Ivoire, Togo, Ghana). There are some pieces from East and Southern Africa, however. There are so many pieces that the guide will invite you to ask about ones you feel drawn to rather than give you an overview. Tastefully arranged both outdoors and in brightly sunlit roomsdoors. Meticulously clean. Highly recommended.

Not bad west African carvings collection
It changed its name to the Museum of African Art or something like that. This is a very small, privately-owned museum (by a Chinese anthropology professor). It is a small 2 (overcrowded) rooms that contain a good collection of masks, carvings and other objects from around West Africa, most of them are tagged with the country of origin and some with the date. You have to pay an entry fee, I was asked an extra fee to take photos, there was no sign(s) that said that photography is not allowed and it kind of felt like extortion. It is not great, but there is nothing else (at least based on my search) that you can do in Lome, so this would be a good place to waste an hour or two during the weekend. Note: This place is not well known, so I had a hard time asking around if any driver can take me there, in the end, I had to use google maps to guide the driver.

    Changed name--but interesting
First its not called this anymore--its called the museum of African Art or something like that. A very interesting hodge-podge of different pieces from all over West Africa. Worth visiting if you are doing a weekend in Lome or have a spare hour or so.
