Unforgettable Experience
Our guide Diego and translator Isidro were great. The cook Conga prepared outstanding meals for us every day, fish, chicken, pasta, and steak for dinner! The beds were comfortable and mosquito nets kept me from being stung at night. The camps were situated to provide an opportunity to swim every evening which was a welcome relief after a day of hiking (sweating) through the jungle. Diego provided the history and perspective of the area and people who lived there and their beliefs and customs. Having to hike for two days before getting to the Lost City made the experience more memorable and worthwhile than just driving up or taking a train to the site. While in the Lost City we were given all the time we needed to look around and take in the site—great tour that I’ll never forget!

Worker-owned Teyuna Tours did a great job
Our guide was Javier Arenas. He made sure we got to see local Wiwa people make handcrafts that other groups skipped. He was responsible and kept us safe. I recommend the five day trip; four is too exhausting (I'm in excellent shape and walk 160 miles a month; I felt beat for 24 hours after finishing the four day trip). The prices are fixed, so all agencies cost the same, but about 8% less than the prices posted to book via Trip Advisor. Five day trips cost the same as four days.

Nobody mentions the food poisoning and the shortage of beds?
Overall the tour is a good experience. I can see why most of the people are pointing out their positive experiences. I’d like to add a few notes you might want to know before starting the trail from a safety point of view. First, the total length of the hike is around 60km. Second, please be aware the fairly high chance of ending up sick because of the lack of hygiene in the camps packed with too many people. From our second day more and more people were getting sick. In some cases very badly. A few people weren’t even able to hike up to the lost city, stayed for an extra day in the camps where they got sick or had to pay EUR 45 per day for a mule to get back to the starting point. Further, the camps you will arrive on the second and third day are regularly overbooked. In our case both camps had to accommodate 128 people but the camps had only a capacity of 100 people, resulting in discussions and negotiations to get a (shared) single mattress or hammock for a proper sleep.
