Take the bus to these stunning gardens!
Most people probably go by cable car to visit these gardens as we had on a previous occasion so this time we took the number 48 bus from the Estrada Monumental - the stop just past Reid’s Hotel going towards Funchal centre. For the princely sum of €1.95 each we had an unforgettable, slightly hair raising trip to Monte taking around 45 mins. It’s about a 10 minute, level walk to the entrance of the gardens. Just inside the entrance is a very nice cafe. The gardens are simply stunning and the plants well labelled. They are set on a steep slope but if you have mobility issues don’t let that put you off as for €2.50 each you can pick up a golf buggy by the lake near the bottom which will return you to the entrance. For me the highlights were the beautiful oriental gardens featuring a large number of Koi carp. Back on board the No. 48 we marvelled at the skill of the bus driver negotiating the narrow steep, roads. You haven’t lived until you’ve experienced one reversing backwards uphill, on a bend, after coming face to face with one coming the other way!

A pleasure
A large garden on a steep hill so be prepared for a lot of steps and wear walking shoes. Garden is well worth the entrance fee of 12.50 euros, with many areas of interest, different views and levels. Lots of plants, though not many flowers in February, so it depends what you want from a garden. Their under-cover cafes were somewhat overwhelmed on the very wet day we visited but we enjoyed the warming hot chocolate, served promptly. The onsite museums have apparently comprehensive, African carving and, in another area, minerals. BTW if you want to get here from the Funchal Lido area bus no. 48 does it for a very small price. There are other buses from central Funchal.
