Excellent and Informative Boat Tour Through a NOLA Area Swamp

This is an excellent tour and I would almost rate it as a “must see” for anyone visiting New Orleans. We booked the tour through Gray Line, an all day bus tour that takes you to the Oak Alley Plantation and then to the Cajun Pride Swamp Tour. Bishop was our boat captain and was both highly humorous and extremely informative. You get to see many animals on the tour.

    Great swamp tour!
We visited at the end of December and had a wonderful tour with around 20-25 gator sightings, including one small yearling and two or three large (8’) gators. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and funny, as well. He did tell us that the number of gators we saw was unusual for this time of year. He said after the next cold front comes through there will be many fewer gators on each tour. We also got to see a raccoon at close range, which was fun. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting to see gators and to see an authentic Louisiana bayou environment.

Fun and educational from start to finish
The trip started with Byron the driver, who picked us up at the hotel and treated us to a wonderful guide of the city and outskirts as we proceeded to the swamp. The trip itself was about 30 min from when the last customer was picked up from the city, and Byron made the time pass very quickly. Once at La Place, we were able to roam the ground a bit and go to the restroom while we waited to board the boat. There were already plenty of alligators near the dock baking themselves in the morning sun (follow the rules and don’t go too close to the water!). Apparently, reptiles were just starting to come out of hibernation. Some of them were caked with mud, proof that they had just come out from spending months burrowed somewhere. Once on the boat, we saw countless alligators, many raccoons, birds, many hardshell turtles and one softshell turtle. The guide was very knowledgeable, informative and funny, and let us hold a baby alligator which was kept on the boat. All in all, a wonderful experience, highly recommended. Because this swamp is mostly privately held, there is no commercial boat traffic, Apparently, that contributes to the multiple animal sightings across the seasons.
