Very busy and vibrant during the holidays
I've been to Covent Garden several times, the most recent visit being in the period leading up to Christmas. The place was positively heaving with visitors, many of whom appeared to be tourists. And with good reason - shops all decked out for the holiday season, street performers actively engaging with the audience, and a general festive feel in the air. We didn't buy anything during this visit (no surprise considering how pricey just about everything was) and would have stopped for some refreshments except most seats were occupied (like I said, very crowded).

Elegant and fun
Covent Garden is the perfect place for browsing, enjoying a drink with friends and enjoying performers. It was interesting to learn from one of the stallholders that this is one of very few markets where the vendors have to be artisans - that means original goods, not mass produced. The Punch and Judy pub is fun for a more energetic event, whilst on top of the central building is great for cocktails (London weather permitting). I always head to Covent Garden when in London.
