A Modest Gem

Housed in what was once, I believe, a school founded by one of Loja's early benefactors, the nicely restored Museum pays homage to Loja's considerable musical past. Collected are instruments, sheet music, awards, certificates and photos of distinguished musical Lojanians (?) past. Also of interest is the statue of Friedrich von Humboldt in the first courtyard (there are two), a man of considerable talents. Of particular note is his correspondence with Karl Marx regarding Simon Bolivar at the time of Napoleon, when the 'great man' theory of history flourished. Worth a visit.

    All in Spanish
We saw this place on a walking tour with an English speaking guide (Free Walks/Loja). Good thing because none of the displays include English descriptions. Would have loved to have heard some examples of the styles of music. A very pretty period building with courtyards. The experience merely began to expose us to the music history of Loja. Would have loved to learn more. There may be English guides available at the museum. If you end up there on your own, you should ask.

    Little of interest here
It is in a pretty colonial building with a courtyard garden. We were the only visitors there at mid-afternoon on a Thursday. The exhibits are mostly old photographs and a few guitars & violins in dusty cases. The exhibit information is all in Spanish, which we can read, but not very interesting. The subject has potential but is undeveloped here.
