Favourite Museum In Loja

The museum is a little ways from downtown but very walkable if you don’t mind an uphill climb. There is a rich variety of indigenous artifacts from various ages.

    Beautiful Museum
My wife and I visited the Archaeological Museum today and were quite pleased. We took a taxi to the "Universidad Tecnica" and were dropped off at the top of the hill near the campus entry gate. The museum is right past the gate on the left side. Entrance to the pretty museum is free and we didn't even have to show our passport. There are three floors connected by a wide spiral walkway offering great city views. The many artifacts are neatly diplayed and well labeled, albeit in Spanish. One of the best museums in Loja. Afterwards, take the time to stroll around the campus to see all the beautiful murals on the buildings. A very pleasant day.

Small museum with a big story
Located on the UTPL campus, just inside the main gate. Large front lobby hosts temporary exhibits - we saw a fascinating art exhibit when we visited. The rest of the space is devoted to the history of Loja and surrounds, with some more general info about Ecuador, too. Petroglyphs, early examples of pottery (domestic and religious), and jewelry are on display, along with good signage (in Spanish) to understand what is being viewed. Well worth taking a taxi to go and see. Bonus attraction: after seeing the museum, walk around and explore the university campus for all the great murals on the exterior of the buildings.
