Kasteel Wijlre is an estate for culture and landscape. The estate combines contemporary art and architecture with cultural heritage and nature. It intertwines five centuries: the seventeenth-century castle, the eighteenth-century Coach House, the nineteenth-century design of the castle gardens, the permanent works in the twentieth-century park, and the Hedge House art pavilion and the contemporary art exhibitions in the twenty-first century. Kasteel Wijlre estate organises exhibitions, interdisciplinary projects, events, and educational activities at the Hedge House, the Coach House, and the garden. Renowned artists, including Richard Long, Tony Cragg, Ben Akkerman, Donald Judd, Stephen Wilks, Michel François, Marlene Dumas, and Christian Jankowski, have exhibited at the Hedge House and the Coach House in solo and group exhibitions. Kasteel Wijlre estate is located in the Zuid-Limburg hills.

Beautiful place... All for yourself!
First thing first, contemporary art is not for everybody. So you may, or may not, be interested in this aspect of the Castle, but apart from that the grounds that surround the beautiful buildings are just stunning ( especially on a warm sunny day like yesterday). There is enough to see and explore to keep one busy for a couple of hours. I was surprised by the lack of visitors, at times it felt as if us two were the only ones in the gardens..PERFECT! Plus it was the first time that, when entering a gallery/site I got to shake the hand of the very helpful receptionist and offered a cup of coffee! Excellent.

Highly recommended location
Modern architectural gallery with newly opened contemporary China artworks in beautiful established gardens befitting the restored chateau centrepiece, are all about harmony of nature and art. Don't rush the journey. We took bus 50 from Maastricht and changed to bus 49 to arrive at Wijlre and Hedge House. The journey is so worthwhile and the owners hospitality so gracious. We spent over two hours here enjoying the environment of this gallery in a garden setting. Highly recommend a visit here.
