German War Cemetery Ysselsteyn, Limburg Province, The Netherlands

4.5 (74 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Ysselsteyn Cemeteries

A very impressive and historic place

A very impressive and historic place. The rolling landscape with grey crosses as far as the eye can see makes you very quiet. There is also a fascinating video / audio experience in the associated restaurant / brasserie. It is a modern and imaginative location.

    Profoundly disturbing
Being Canadian, we visited the Canadian War Graves Cemetary first at Groesbeek, where there are approx.2300 fallen Canadian Hero's buried in a sad but peacefull site. After visiting other sites connected to Market Garden, we then deceided to visit Ysselsteyn. What a shock......... It is almost impossible to describe to someone who has not visited there, the enormity of a cemetary containing approx.31,000 graves.....yes, 31,000 gray granite crosses, in lines as far as the eye can see, and beyond, some with a name and number, but many with only the words "Ein Deutscher Soldat". Yes, these were the Germans, the "Bad Guys", but I would guess that a good part of the 31,000 people resting there were just regular soldiers just doing their job, and this comes from me,someone born during the war in England and had close family fighting them during WW2. It takes a visit to a cemetary this size, at my age, to soften old attitudes.
