Sweetheart Rock, Hawaii, United States

Fabulous walk with variety
Lanai isn't big on signs, so if you don't know about this, PLEASE check it out, but don't look for the sign. From Hulopo'e Beach, walk along the left side. Please take some time to explore the wonderful tide pools! From the place where the stairs go down to the tide pools, there's a little path to the left that will take you over to a beautiful arch rock and Sweetheart rock (which we've always called Chocolate Cake rock.) This is a VERY short hike that could be done in flip-flops. Bring your camera. You will see tide pools and beautiful water and rocks, a little beach that's difficult to get to ... and of course, the great rock. NOTE: there are no rails, and some very steep cliffs. If you have children, do not let go of their hands! :-)

A stunning vista
This unsual rock formation is a short walk from Manele Bay and the Four Seasons hotel. The view of the rock and the nearby cliff takes your breath away. The surrounding ocean landscape and tidal pools with marine life also reminds you of Hawaii of days gone by. I am from Honolulu, and these days views like this on Oahu are few and far between. The story surrounding the rock, which involves star crossed lovers, adds to the allure and mystique of the area. There is actually an old Hawaiian stone memorial on the rock, apparently dating from ancient times. I can't imagine how the ancient Hawaiians were able to build this memorial because the only way to do it is by scaling the treacherous cliff walls. On my way back from the bluff towards the beach, I saw spinner dolphins in the ocean. One warning: do not walk to the rock in the middle of the day. It was incredibly hot and there is no shade. There are also some sheer drops, so this area is not suitable for young children.
