What a fiasco!

This hike is supposed to be 12.3 miles and by the time we were done it was 19 miles! The trail is by the cemetery behind Koele Lodge. The signs point to Koloiki Ridge Trail so we knew that was a branch off trail from the Munro. However, there were many different trails without signs! We had to hike the Koloiki Ridge since we were here so we did that and we were not disappointed. We now had to find the Munro Trail and we finally found it at 1:30. We saw a sign as we walked about 800 meters so we knew we were finally on it. It’s just a 4x4 road and now that I did the whole thing I would tell people it was very boring! There was a lot of cloud cover so we didn’t see much and the last 4 miles were very long and boring. I would suggest the Koloiki Ridge Trail. The Munro Trail is off limits to vehicles so that is the one nice thing about the trail. I wouldn’t want to hike and share the road with off road vehicles.

Awesome running trail with incredible views!
This is one of my favorite trails. We were staying at the Manele Bay Resort and took the shuttle bus up to the Lodge. From the Lodge , one of the bell guys took us in a smaller van to the trailhead, located near the grave site. The basic trail is reportedly 7 miles, but we tracked it with our GPS watches and we ran a 13 mile route back down to the road where we got a ride back to Manele. The trail takes you through rainforests, sandy foundations, red dirt up to a summit of about 3400 feet. On our way out to the trail, everyone at the hotel warned us that only 4-wheel drives take that road and one should never try to run it. Well....never say that to addicted trail runners in constant search of adventure! It was absolutely beautiful, fabulous views at every angle, but make sure to strap on a hydration pack of some sort and food for the trek. Have you ever heard of 'Red Dirt'? Well, I now have permanent 'Red Shoes'! It was a great adventure!

    Munro Trail
Many posters are confusing the Munro Trail with the Koloiki Ridge Trail. The latter is the 5 mile hike behind the lodge, and there is a small amount of overlap with the Munro Trail. The Munro trail itself is a 12.5 mile dirt road that begins about a mile from the Lodge and ends at the road 2.5-3 miles above Manele Bay. On a late December morning, much of the trail was shrouded in mist and the road was largely empty. There were a few people out on an ATV excursion, and they looked cold and somewhat miserable, possibly also because the visibility was terrible and so there was nothing to see at most of the viewpoints. The trail did make for a very enjoyable, cool and shady long run. If you plan to traverse on foot, definitely bring enough water as once you get out of the cloud, the weather can be quite hot.
