Wonderful Hawaiian petroglyph site!

On the way to Shipwreck Beach, about 200 yards from the last Jeep Turnaround. A really great site with many cool old Hawaiian petroglyphs. Just like those in the Four Corners states, these really bring a picture of what their lives were like. Really worth the short hike but wear sturdy shoes due to thorns and lava rock. Follow the cairns to the site.

    Interesting Petroglyph Site
My wife and I hunted petroglyphs while at Shipwreck Beach. At Shipwreck, there will be an informative sign about a native Hawaiian Village that used to be there. You will be hiking about a 1/2 mile up some lava fields toward the petroglyph site. Wear hiking shoes or sneakers. I went in sandals, which was a bad idea, as there are lot of sharp lava rocks and thorns (one went through my sandal, but didn't break skin!) You know you are on the right path because there are little "towers" of stacked lava rocks showing you the way. Once you get to the petroglyph site, there will be another informative sign about the site. There is a collection of large boulders. Look on the left side of the boulders. The petroglyphs here look like white sidewalk chalk drawings. The glyphs on the lower part tend to be faded (likely from tourists touching them), but if you like higher up, there are some well defined ones of people, and animals. We also went down past the boulders, but there aren't any glyphs there. If you have seen some of the petroglyphs on the Big Island, these are different. The Big Island glyphs seem to have been carved into the lava rock, whereas these were either drawn on or scraped into the rock. We are a fan of exploring the islands and getting off the resort. So this was fun for us!

    Worth the short hike
Great place to see petroglyphs. Wear closed shoes for the 15 minute walk. Stickers and sharp rocks can be encountered. Once to the site, walk to the left side of the rock and see the art. Hard to imagine these carvings are 100's of years old. Remnants of where the structures once stood are all around. Best part of the Lanai experience for us.
