Interactive museum

This looks like a fairly new museum with many interactive displays for children. There are several short movies to watch with different languages available. The staff is friendly and helpful, although English is limited. It helped me better understand the role Kagoshima played in Japanese history.

    Came away more learned!
Hadn't realised what a significant role this city and Kyusyu had played in 'recent' Japanese history- the conflict and determination of the scholars of Kagoshima. Their story is remarkable, they must have been extremely clever, intelligent and adaptable young men. We came to Kagoshima because of its geography and came away impressed also by its history. Excellent museum and interesting show to illustrate the history [English language headsets are excellent]

    Well curated (for Japanese speakers)
The Museum is in a pleasant building along the promenade, not far from the main train station. There’s a nice walk along the river that passes the museum. The staff are quite helpful, though there is little English, and offer a multi-lingual tablet you can carry to play the audio (aloud w/o headphones) at various locations. A significant section is about specific people which is difficult to recall later unless you are quite familiar with Japanese history. The displays are quite varied including some dioramas (which I love) though almost everything is only in Japanese. The lower level includes adoption of technologies including the telegraph, photography and glass blowing. There’s a small gift shop and a cafe outside. It’s an easy stop but not worthwhile as a destination in itself.
