Pyhtaa Church of Saint Henry, Kymenlaakso, Finland

4.5 (13 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Pyhtaa Churches & Cathedrals

Unique medieval church

This church ls located at Pyhtää, maybe short 5km side trip from main highway. The church is unique, because it has survived its life without modifications since 1460s. Only one door has been added and structural supporting pillars. The bell tower was built next to it 1820. It has not been destroyed during wars that has moved the border in the neighbourhood. Also window decoration and structure is quite uncommon. Summary: highly recommended, worth that detour.

    Beautiful inside and outside
I came here with a friend during a 3 day stay at his summerhouse in the next village along from Pyhtaa. It's a wonderful place to visit if on the way to or from the east of Finland or for the rare visitors to this part of the country. There are some lovely paces nearby too, but this is one of the nicest. I was most impressed by the huge depiction of St Christopher on the far wall of the church. However, there are many other paintings and statues, some dating from medieval times. I loved the picturesque location of the church, situated on a branch of the "King's Road" right by the Kymi River. We noticed the visiting hours and arrangements at the front door on a notice board. Casual visitors are only allowed in from June to September. At other times, an appointment needs to be made with the churchwarden to enter. However, the well-tended gardens and the exterior of the church are well worth seeing in themselves and merit a visit for a period of quiet contemplation. Unfortunately, when I was there, it was drizzling with rain so I could only have a quick look round the grounds and cemetery, but having seen the inside made up for that.

    A well-preserved medieval stone church
The Pyhtää stone church is one of the few remaining Finnish medieval churches. It is the smallest grey stone church of Finland, but what makes it really special is the well restored medieval wall paintings. Wonderful! And the employees do a good job telling all about the paintings and the history of the church. Worth stopping by.
