Fascinating Boat Cruise at Sunset
On a previous trip to St Lucia I had been on a boat cruise so I had decided not to do one on this trip. However my mind was changed when another traveler told me about the Shakabarker boat cruise. The primary reason I changed my mind was being told how knowledgeable the guides were and how interesting it had been. I would strongly advise taking the last trip of the day as it includes a sunset which was stunning the evening we went.

Two hour Hippo and Croc Cruise for dad's birthday
We were collected at Eco-Lodge in an old army safari vehicle, what an awesome experience that was on its own. Our guide Heynie introduced himself and we headed off to the Shakabaker launch area. Before setting off, Heynie gave us a brief explanation of the Isimangaliso wetland parks, the meaning and interesting history before feeding the daily visitors next to the boat, the cheeky catfish. We saw many many birds, including a kingfisher with food in hes mouth, many weavers and even a female fish eagle. We saw a croc and many hippo. Heynie was amazing and i highly recommend that you experience a cruise with him on board, hes very insightful and has so much knowledge to share. Thank you Heynie, Kian and Shakabaker for a wonderful day spend on board for my dads birthday.

Tranquil and interesting
I managed to get a 06h30 cruise up the estuary. Got picked up bright and early at 06h15 and taken down to the boat. First things first, a cup of coffee, and set off upriver. Smooth enough not to spill my coffee. A journey up river was a stop/go affair to view crocs and hippos and birds. At the apex of the tour, we were served coffee, fruit and muffins while observing a bloat (family) of hippos. Not a large boat, so a smaller crowd makes it a more individual trip with direct contact to the guide. Safely back and dropped off back at your accomodation. Do take cash. No card facilities.
