All day fun in the sun

Naval Island is possibly one of Richards Bay’s most popular picnic spots. Every weekend/holiday, hundreds of people flock to Naval Island for a day to sit back and relax. There is lots of space for you to put up your gazebo, put down your camping chairs and set up the braai. You can either swim, walk on the shores or sit back and watch the shipping movements. There is a boat launch ramp, so take your boat or jet ski and enjoy a day of fun. I always take my dog with, and she has a ball swimming, digging or rolling in the sand. Naval Island is a favorite, and as a local resident, possibly one of my most visited places in Richards Bay. Only negativity, there are no toilets.

    Relaxing beach
    I’m sure that on the weekends and holidays Naval Island is packed. We hit the beach midweek and we had it completely to ourselves! We laid in the sand, Swam, played ukulele and enjoyed the afternoon. The water was easy to swim in, gentle waves and no strong current. We did some snorkeling near each jetty and we saw plenty of fish, but the water was a little murky in some places. The best activity was just wading in the warm water in the sun. It was a bonus that we could park close enough to see our car while we were swimming. We also spotted beautiful bird playing in the trees around us. It was an enjoyable experience. I suggest that you hit this beach midweek, early in the day.

    A small tar road accessible penisula rather than island
    Naval island located via the Richards Bay Waterfront is a long disused naval base with superb beaches inside the main harbour entrance and affords one superb views all ships coming to dock. It is accessed by tar road level and used by locals and visitors as a safe picnic location in Richards Bay.
