Konya Archaeological Museum, Konya Province, Turkiye

4.0 (129 reviews) Spent Ranking #15 in Konya Speciality Museums

A small and old museum, but with some nice artefacts.

The museum is close to the bazaar and Aladdin Hill and easily reachable on foot from the city centre. The entrance is free. The museum itself is quite small. It has artefacts from Catalhoyuk and other nearby Neolithic sites. It has some artefacts from Assyrian trading posts in Anatolia some thousands of years ago. But the most impressive artefacts on display are probably the Roman sarcophagi, particularly the one depicting the labours of Hercules. Outside is a garden filled with classical statuary and grave markers. All in all, it is a small museum, but well worth spending a little time in, particularly as it is free.

    The Sarcophagus!
It didn't look attractive at first especially looking at the building but the sarcophagus - OMG it is amazing!!!! I love them! While usually the best collection would be displayed in Museum of Anatolian Civilization Ankara, why the sarcophagus is still there :-))) Almost intact sarcophagus from Pamphylia and well, it is just beautiful. Outside the museum building there are many ancient collections available, and I could stare at them for hours. Free entrance and sometimes only few visitors were there.

    Charming museum worth seeing
I'm generally a fan of archaeological museums and this one is charming and small with some great pieces. The sarcophagus were incredibly detailed and high quality (certainly rivaling some of the ones in the Istanbul museum of archaeology) and the pieces from Catalhoyuk were special and eye-catching. Admission was free when we visited and the staff were helpful. We parked behind the museum so spent some time looking for a place to eat but there are several small local restaurants right in front of it if you're there around a mealtime!
