Very pleasant area!

This great area, in downtown Knoxville, offers great shopping and many places to dine. The grounds are lovely, well kept, and pedestrian only. It is a great place to just stroll. We were lucky enough to visit the weekend of the Chalk Walk. Many artists came out to create their masterpieces for all to enjoy. That was a very pleasant surprise! This square is quite popular for festivals but just as pleasant to stroll around on a lazy afternoon.

Nice local place to see Knoxville.
When we were here on a Wednesday, they had a farmers market set up. It added to the ambiance. Either way, this was worth checking out. There are stores along both sides, and an alley, Strong Street (more of a one way alley than a street) next to it that features local graffiti artists. The graffiti is not the usual ugly tags one sees on the sides of buildings and train cars, but instead, some excellent quality artwork on the walls of the alley buildings. The market place is quiet and sits next to a park. Even with the farmers market up and running, it was not noisy. It was an inviting place to wander around. As for public restrooms, be aware that they are located to the right of the Wall Avenue entrance of the adjacent parking garage, just west of Market Square. We had to ask, and ended up walking back to the garage! They don't stand out.

    Knoxville's unique central shopping/dining location
For those who do not know, Market Square is downtown Knoxville's crown jewel. It is a rectangular, open air shopping and dining mecca.located within walking distance of Gay Street attractions, the Old City and even World's Fair Park. There are many dining options. The square itself is a melting pot for Knoxvillians---a place to meet and browse and take in the history of the city. James Agee wrote of Market Square in his Pulitzer winning book, "A Death in the Family" and Cormac McCarthy wrote lovingly of his experiences in and around the Square in his wonderful novel, "Suttree". Check it out.
