Chagga Museum, Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania

Caves were ok, lunch was AMAZING!!

Had one extra day after climbing Kilimanjaro and decided to give this a try. The caves were interesting but the guide left a lot to be desired and couldn’t answer a lot of questions. Felt awkward, very one note and quite boring. The highlight here is the FOOD!!! Be sure to arrange to have lunch here, hands down the best food I had in Tanzania!! My guide arranged it and I’m so glad he did. Otherwise I’d skip this excursion and just do the Maasai village experience followed by the hot springs.

Story telling in Chagga caves, museum, and local bar
We visited both the live museum and also the chagga caves near by. In the chagga caves we learned a lot of history about the chagga's survival strategy and struggles with the other tribes. Very interesting to visit the caves and the guide there is a good story teller with good English! In the live museum there was a lot of tools being used and I guess it is called live museum because they have live goats and a cow in the traditional chagga house. After this we convinced our driver to take us to a local bar to tast the local beer "mbege" made from bananas and millet. Awful tast, but something to tick off the list ;-)

An interesting place to visit if you are in the region
I wouldn't particularly make a special trip to the museum BUT there are a number of other interesting things to see in that area - including the waterfalls and the chagga caves and the combination of all three makes for a very fascinating day. The museum itself is small and the displays are all static, but interesting - the best part about the museum is the replica hut (complete with smoky fire and resident cows) which you can go into and listen to a talk by a local man.
