Tunnels Beach, Hawaii, United States

4.5 (941 reviews) Spent Ranking #24 in Kauai Beaches

Great beach…Difficult access

Also known as Makua Beach, Tunnels Beach gets its nickname from the maze of lava tubes found throughout its expansive reef. Here, you'll find lots of marine life—large schools of reef fish, turtles and even wild dolphins—making it one of the best spots for snorkeling in Kauai. Visit during summer for calm waters or during winter when it becomes a surfer's paradise. You can also simply stroll down the white sand beach and enjoy views of the scenic green peaks of Mount Makana to the west. Tours of Kauai often include a stop here; you can even fly over the beach on a helicopter tour. – Tripadvisor

    Great beach…Difficult access
Enjoyed the snorkeling and scenery here. The reef right along the shore was surprising good, better in some ways than the larger complex that extends offshore from the point. Lots of fish and coral in a variety of sizes, groupings, and depth. We parked at Haena Beach Park. The walk down the beach to the snorkeling (particularly the larger complex off the point) is tiring.

This is the beach you dream of.
An idyllic backdrop, crystalline water, ample sand, and even some coral to boot. Consummate snorkelers will tell you that there's not much color to the marine life and they're right. Your best bet is to have a close encounter with a honu. Even without the technicolor sea flora and fauna, it's a beach where one can spend hours enjoying the sun, sand, water, and scenery. Take advantage of the limited access via Kuhio Highway while it lasts to enjoy the crowd-free beach Monday - Saturday. Bring your own food and drink; there are only coconuts for sale around here.
