Lake Balkhash is a bit of a drive from everywhere but once you get there it is quite beautiful. Not your usual lake/beach vacation style place, lots of fishing going on here as that is a main industry of the area. Still friendly people, nice sandy beach, warm-ish water but murky just from silt, lots of people with rods catching dinner, good bit of infrastructure in the community and we had a fun day and night here.

Balkash magic
We were here at the weekend. The weather was good. The water was warm. The people were happy. Unfortunately we were at a pebbly beach. I hear there are other beach resorts which are sandy. There I would advise you to go.

But if you fish, its heaven....
I've just spent the weekend at the lake with 6 Kazakh fisherman, sleeping in a caravan after a 7hr drive from Almaty. Much of the land surrounding the lake is steppe / scrub so not that entertaining, but the lake itself is a rich haven for aquatic wildlife plus there is plenty of birds zipping around above you too. So.. as a traditional holiday trip location there is little there, but as a fishing resort is it wonderful....
