Oya History Museum, Kanto, Japan

4.5 (605 reviews) Saturday: 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #1 in Tochigi Prefecture Speciality Museums

If your looking for something different you’ve found it.

We decided to go here because it was very different from the normal touristy attractions. But let me tell you it didn’t disappoint the way it is set up is amazing. Lights set in such a way to enhance the features of each room. The place just kept going it was huge once you got underground. Please remember to take a jacket it is quite cool down there.

Magical place, combine with Oya Temple & Heiwa Kannon Statue
30 minutes on Bus # 45 大谷経由・立岩 from Bus Stop 6 outside of Utsunomiya Station's West Exit - only one or two buses per hour. There's a one-day ticket 大谷観光一日乗車券 including buses and entrance to both the museum and the temple for 1600 yen that can be bought at 関東自動車 宇都宮駅前定期券センター which is a minute from Utsunomiya Station's West Exit, near Chisun Hotel チサンホテル. You'll probably need half an hour at each place, just a short walk in between.

    A cool and unique experience!
About 30 minutes out of town by Bus 45, we stopped at Shiryokan Iriguchi bus stop and took a short walk to this museum. We walked passed the ticketing counter through a doorway and turned left down flights of stairs into the museum. Barely about 10 or 15m down I can feel the change in temperature. As we descended furter, the temperature dropped to a constant 12 or 13 C. It is literally very cool insided here! The carved out huge "rooms" by the quarry miners of recent past is quite a sight and defir something unique! I am glad to have made it here to get a summer heat reprieve in this unique place! Tips: A 1-day Oya Bus Pass (1750 yen pax) entitles unlimited bus ride on Bus 45 (otherwise 900 yen return bus ride) plus free entry to this museum (otherwise 800 yen) and the Oya-ji (otherwise 400 yen) next door where a 1000 hands Kannon can be seen inside it. Also, opposite Oya-ji is the huge Heiwa Kannon statue, carved out on the rock face.
