Riam Kanan Dam, Kalimantan, Indonesia

4.0 (12 reviews) Spent More than 3 hours Ranking #3 in South Kalimantan Dams

Biggest hidroelectric dam

It is the biggest hydroelectric dam in Kalimantan, but nothing else special. I suggest to rent a boat and sail to Pinus Island or other small island nearby. Or, hike to Matang Kaladan peak and see magnificent scenery of the dam and lake from above.

Floating Hotels, Old Growth Rainforest, Amazing Hikes
There are a million things to do in Riam Kanan. The people are friendly and everything is safe. You can hike to Kahung waterfalls from Belangian (spend the night at 'shelter kembar' - two wooden huts on a clean river); you can hike to Kahung peak (the second tallest in the province - below Halau-halau). There's a floating hotel called Penginapan Terapung outside of Bukit Batas village where you can get a room with AC and a mattress - on the river! Take a raft to the shore and hike to the peak of Bukit Batas in a few hours. The views are amazing and you will always see animals (gibbons, fireflies, lizards, scorpions!) If you're a real explorer and want to see old growth rainforest, try to find a guide to Pahayangan Mountain. If you love old growth rainforests - you'll be really impressed! There are 3 sacred ponds on top and nobody messes with the environment up there! And it's OTHERWORLDLY. If you'd like to know more search for Voices Above the Dam on Facebook and I would love to help you access the adventures here.
