    Wonderful wall paintings
Jakob Skovgaard's paintings from the turn of last century fill this lovely church. Go into the crypt and look at the remaining parts of the old medieval church, once famous for crowning Danish kings

    Romanesque Revival and Marvellous Murals
I´ll admit right away that I might be somewhat biased regarding Viborg Domkirke (Viborg Cathedral). I grew up not far north of Viborg and loved visiting the cathedral when I was a kid: The colorful frescoes created by Joakim Skovgaard (1856-1933) and his team of painters make the interior stand out from what you'll typically experience in most Danish churches. Skovgaard drew inspiration from both byzantine art, the early Italien renaissance and contemporary art when he devised the design. Some find it a bit too colorful, som find the images to naive - I find it festive and original. The church building one sees today dates from the 1870's. It replaced the midiaval cathedral of Viborg which had at that point become so dilapidated that it wasn't considered worthwhile trying to save it. Only the original crypt dating from the early 12th century survived . The present church has been much critiqued for it's austere appearance, but it is however the most ambitious and convincing example of Romanesque Revival in Denmark.
