Very well maintained and presented
Spøttrup Castle is the closest thing Denmark has to a real medieval castle. Surrounded by the enormous moat, it is beautifully located by Spøttrup Lake. The castle’s strong defences have kept the enemy at bay over the yars, and the castle has never been occupied. The castle has a beautiful medicinal garden inspired by the medieval and Renaissance periods, including an amazing herb garden with more than 280 plants. A large number of events are held at the castle during the year: guided tours, holiday activities, markets, live re-enactments and much more.

Nice little castle — but its rooms are fully empty
We had a good time visiting the castle, but we expected a bit more from our tour. The fortress is very well kept but its rooms are almost entirely empty. It would have been nice if there had been old tools, accessories furniture from the Medieval era.

A Bishops Gloomy Castle
Spøttrup Castle is one of the very few wellpreserved danish castles dating from the middleages; most have been either torn down or thoroughly modernized during later periods. Spøttrup was probably finished in the 1520's when it was owned by the Viborg bishop Jørgen Friis. The castle is not big compared to what you might see in England, France or other European countries but it has the right austere, gloomy appearance that allows your imagination to fly. And it is to my knowledge the only fully double-moated castle in Denmark :-) - the castle is a museum today and throughout the year the host various events entailing medieval reenactment. during the year
