World's largest (man-made) limestone mine
Mønsted Kalkgrube can be translated to Mønsted Limestone Mine and has been so for over 1000 years. The museum (to the left after the ticket office) tells the story about limestone and chalk production and of the bats living in the mines (usually only hibernating during winter). The mine (to the right, accessible also by small train) is impressive and very un-Danish. Add some staglamites and it would have been like the Mediterranean grottoes. But still: Man made. The most accessible mine-shafts and tunnels are well-lit, but if you want to go beyond the electric lights (and you can!) you should bring a powerful flashlight. No - the one in your Smartphone won't do! The mine lacked written information but this was somewhat provided in the 15-minute multimedia show (with English and German subtitles) in one of the large grottoes. All in all, a very interesting experience. Not too expensive (DKK 70,- per adult) but more in-depth information about history and geology would have made our day.
