Aalborg Forsvars Og Garnisonsmuseum, Jutland, Denmark

4.5 (83 reviews) Spent Ranking #6 in North Jutland Speciality Museums

Fun for kids and adults

We are 3 adults with 2 kids of 6 and 4.5 years old. We were all happy even though none of us knows much about military nor war. Visitors can touch and sit and clim everything unless otherwise stated. The collection was massive and impressive, ranging from transport to guns to missiles to all kinds of equipments I don’t even recall what they are called anymore. In the courtyard, there were several tanks and military vehicles visitors can climb in. Kids loved the paddles cars in the spacious courtyard. We spent about 2 hours there. If we had brought lunch, we could have easily spent more time there. They offer combi tickets with the Springeren (submarine) Maritime museum. Great savings. Aalborg street food hall is just 1km walk away, which is 400m away from the Springeren maritime museum. Convenient to visit both on same day.

    Danish military history
Great spot to discover the Danish history specifically the military one, this museum is covering all areas of the Danish military history, providing hundreds of items for each period since the 17-18th century and WWI & WWII, the cold war until today. Also it was interesting the part of refugees in Denmark after WWII, many similarities with nowadays. The museum cover different parts of the military: the air force, the land forces, the police, the military police, the firefighters department, the telecommunication, the military medical services... I spent few hours there visiting every part of it. also outside the hangar, different tanks are there with the possibility to have a look inside them. as a ladder is available next to each one.

A wide range of military kit
I went to this museum with my adult son and his friend. We are all pretty knowledgeable about WWII and have visited many military museums together in several countries. I didn't have high expectations but the lads were keen. However, my attitude changed very quickly. The lady selling the entrance tickets (50DKK) gave a quick briefing in English and identified that great Danish attitude that the exhibits can be touched, sat on and operated unless it says not to - so unlike British museums. There are several aircraft as used by the RDAF, motorbikes, tanks, fire vehicles and army lorries and jeeps. A whole section is devoted to small weapons through more than a century; upstairs is a load of very large weapons like anti-aircraft guns. There is so much WWII information and equipment that it is difficult to take it all in. Then there is an extensive amount of uniforms on mannequins; regimental badges and buttons; history and tapestries; photos and dioramas. Any thing Danish that had a uniform is represented in the museum one way or another. The fact that so many historical things can be handled and stood on, climbed over and in, makes this museum and its exhibits very special. No one of any age can get bored - maxed out with information may be - but not bored. We were very impressed.
