Panmen Gate, Jiangsu, China

Loved loved loved it!

Hugeeeeee area to walk and lots to see. Pan Gate is the only existing gate in Suzhou today and the only one that has land AND water gates. Ancient Suzhou had 8 gates surrounding and protecting it. There’s the Wu Gate Bridge here too, Suzhou’s oldest bridge. In addition, there’s the Wu Zixu memorial temple here too.

Top Suzhou attraction in my books
If I were to visit one attraction in Suzhou – this would be the one. It’s got a pagoda, a temple, bell and drum tower, lake, garden, gazebos, an ancient wall and tower, canals, bridges, a rockery/grotto. It’s also very spacious so feels uncrowded. No nearby metro so I didi-ed here.

    An outstanding attraction
The Pan Men gate area of Suzhou is outstanding. Even if you can't get enough of the traditional gardens of this town, you should make a visit here part of your exploration. Access is relatively easy - get off at Nanmen station on the blue subway line (line 4), and walk for about 15 minutes to the entrance. Pan Men consists of a wonderful garden with pagodas and temples, as well as part of the ancient city wall, including one of the old gates, which blocked access both from land and from water. The garden is beautiful, and the view from the top of the gate, especially at sunset, is amazing.
