阿萨德

I enjoyed the bus ride across each morning and the hustling walk each night. I felt as if I was reliving the moments of the Vietnam war when we sent young men into boats without lights, food or elbow room. I could feel the insanity of Vietnam.

    The historical bridge
This definitely is the iconic bridge for China. It was completed in 1968 and is the first double-decker, double-track highway and railway bridge designed and constructed by the Chinese without outside engineering assistance.

    Symbol of Pride
Three reasons for visiting this attraction: One - This is the longest dual function bridge of highway and railway listed in the Guinness Book of Records. Two - It was constructed and built by Chinese engineers. The Soviet architects abandoned the project when relationship between Mao's China and the Soviet Russia turned sour. It was Mao's symbol of pride to be self-reliant and to be able to construct the mega bridge with his own people's effort. Three - The bridge `boasted' and surpassed the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge as the world most popular suicide site with more than 2000 suicide since 2006. One famous volunteer by the name of Chen Si had stopped more than 300 people from committing suicide at this bridge. Chen Si was named the `Angel of Nanjing' for his contribution in saving the numerous lives. On one hand, the bridge is a symbol of Chinese nationalistic fervor but on the other hand, it is also the platform that `catapulted' the many wandering depressed into suicide. Mao statue stands robustly at the entrance overlooking the bridge and the river. If he is alive, he probably would disapprove the acts of the suicide victims and sent them to rehabilitation camps if he caught them.
