Popular with locals and Indonesian tourists
Malioboro street is extremely popular with the locals and Indonesian tourists. So my expectation was high when I chose to stay at Novotel Suites Yogyakarta in Malioboro since it was written in Google reviews and several websites that this is “the place” to stay and hangout in the day and night. I was all excited when I first walked along the street taken in by the local street vibe of horse carts and motorized “beca” or tricycle during the day and come nightfall, there were live musics on the street and lots and lots of locals..either walking up and down the street or just sit on every possible benches available. For us, after wandering up and down the street, there was’t much to see, do, eat or drink. It’s just shop after shop selling the same stuffs and lots and lots of batik shops if you are into batik. The only nice shop along the street is Hamzah Batik which is an upscale boutique store. Do not expect to find anything here that cater for international or western tourists. There are few local street stalls and shops selling local food off Malioboro Street. That’s about it. If you really, really must visit Malioboro Street, I would suggest to do in the evening when it is livelier with some street musics. But don’t expect to find food and drink that cater for international tourists.

New concept
The pedestarian is now free from street vendors. They are being allocated to 2 spot on each end of the road. Now the street is filled with park chairs and esthetic road blocks. I just wish they still give space for street performer so the entertainment can be enjoyed, not only street for shopping
