Gedong Songo Temple, Java, Indonesia

Walked 5 temples

I walked to see 5 temples out of 9. I think they also recommend walking to 5 since the map shows only 5. You can use a horse if you do not wish to walk. However the walk is very easy. You can slowly take 1.5h to cover all 5. The scenery is pretty on the 2nd temple so do go to at least the second one. It is higher up so you have a better vista. There are relatively very little people on the 4th/5th temple so you have it for yourself if you do walk to the 5th one.

    Beautiful view and ancient temple
I had a very short trip to Semarang and the choice was either Borobudur or Gedung Songo. Since i felt that most likely i would be going to Jogja in the future i felt it was best to do Borobudur on that trip but focus on Gedung Songo since it was close to Semarang. And i was happy i did that. Initially it was raining and i felt that it would have obscured the view however as we arrived the rain became a drizzle. We opted for the horse ride to Candi 3 as it was quite late then - 4.30pm and i thought we had to rush before the closing time but apparently they had no designated closing time (just that the ticket counter closes at 5pm - thereafter apparently one can just walk through (?)). Candi 1 had still quite a lot of people - we had to wait just to take pictures. But by the time we were at Candi 2 and 3 - there was no one at all. The whole place was ours. The view was breathtaking and on a clear day i guess it must be even better. The whole area was green and natural.Rustic. The ancient temples rising out of nowhere seemed very Indiana-Jones like. I think this was probably more meditative and peaceful than crowd-filled Borobudur. Unforunately we did not complete the circuit to do Candi 4 and 5 and i regretted but it was still good. I think if we hiked it was do-able too but we didn't have much time. The horses were well-kept and tame. The minder will hold the horse and walk along. He said there were 130 horses and each horse usually goes up and down about 4-5x a day and so does the minder. Up to Candi 3 and back again - it cost me IDR 100,000. I gave a good tip as the minder was very polite. Go there !

High land to set your mind free
there's 5 ancient temple on the mountain. the stone path will take you to get all of it. The air was so fresh you can see the fog when the wind blown it down. Be ready with your sweeter or jacket when you're here. if you strong enough do hiking (about 4km) but if you to tired to visited it all, you can use the horse to get around the complex site.
