Beringharjo Market, Java, Indonesia

Great market - very busy

Great market. Massive and easy to get lost in. Found awesome local batik down the side alleys and watching the locals buying their daily stuff. Local food around if you hunt around the little corners and entrances.

A large market that is worth a visit
If you are in the Malioboro Street area, it's worth your time to visit these markets. They are quite large and there's a lot to see. You'll find plenty of locals shopping here and it is quite busy. You can buy cheap souvenir clothing from here for a bit cheaper than what you'll find on Malioboro Street.

One of the larger local markets
We visited a couple of times when we were in the Jalan Maliaboro area. The first time was on Sunday and the place was too packed and hot. We returned on a weekday when the crowds were less. However, we were quite disappointed as the shops mostly sold identical items, especially batik clothing. There were not many spice shops, though there are kitchenware stalls along one side where you can find beautiful scales. Foodwise, we were not sure of the cleanliness of the place, as the floors were wet and dirty, even though we have eaten at other markets in Bali, Bangkok and Vietnam. There were also not many fruits on offer. Yes, it is interesting to visit to see how the locals shop etc, but do not expect much in terms of purchasing items. There is an interesting section on the second floor where you can see wedding dresses and finery.
