Place for healing

Ambarawa is not like other cities in Central Java. It’s quite and slow, there is no hustle, it’s super calm. Yet, it is suitable for individual travellers or families to have wonderful experience. If you come from big cities, this place is panacea for you to ease your mind and get healing experience. The food is excellent and inexpensive, people is warm and welcome.

Fun Way to Spend an Hour
The museum features old locomotives and railway cars from early to mid 20th century. You can learn about the history of Indonesian Railway, and you can explore old railway engines and take lots of fun family pictures. If you come early, you have the chance to purchase tickets for the tour train that only runs twice a day.

    ambarawa steam railway
Visiting the Ambarawa railway museum on a day trip from our cruise ship the experience didnt disapoint. A drive from Semarang took us to the central highlands of Java to Tantung station, where we boarded an ancient narrow guage train consisting of four wheeled carriages. At the head of which was an equally old 0-4-2 Tank locomotive. Our journey to Ambarawa was very interesting taking us by the stunning Rawa Pening lake, rice paddies, forests and villages, where the people live in close proximity to the railway. It was advertised as a 45 minute run but it was more like 30 minutes. On arrival at Ambarawa staion we saw a large number of old steam trains dating from the Dutch colonial era on display in the open. We were able to climb on the footplates of most and it really was a steam buffs delight. The coach journey to and from the attraction was interesting from the coast to the highlands of Java. Worth a visit.
