Unusual and interesting church visit

If you are in the area of Istria, it’s worth paying a visit to the Church of St Blaise at Vodnjan to see the remains of the saints’ bodies which are preserved without having been embalmed. The church member who greeted our small group was very welcoming, a passionate story teller, and quite a character. After a brief tour of the church, he took us behind the altar to the crypt where the bodies lie in glass cases in a darkened room. He proceeded to tell us their stories, in quite a dramatic fashion, including how the bodies had been scientifically examined and that their preservation could not be accounted for. We then listened to a recording after which we were invited to look more closely at the bodies. There is also a museum containing other holy relics but we did not go in there. Without visiting the museum we spent 20-30 minutes in the church and crypt and it costs between 2-10 euros per adult depending on what you want to see.

    Pretty weird
Old mummies dressed as catholic priests, skulls with cut-outs to hold flowers, labeled bones. Interesting in a very weird way. We love this little town though and want to go live there!

    Interesting Church
The church looks very Italian on the outside and very Austrian on the inside! Lovely pastel colours, not too overly decorated. We went to see the famous Mummies using the bus from Pula bus station which are regular. You have to pay to see them, 50 Kuna per adult for Mummies only and 75 Kuna per adult for them and a guide of the other artefacts (skulls and bones) which are in front of the alter, the Mummies being behind it. We were shown around by an entertaining chap who is also very strict at re-enforcing the dress code for entering the church, no shorts of stringy tops for either sex's. We saw a male and a female being refused entry to the church for those reasons. Vodnjan is a lovely historic small town and only around 5 miles north of Pula.
